Recreating Tanizaki, In Praise Of Shadow

This was the first encounter with a book that inspired me deeply and continued to influence my work ever since.
In this image, a figure lies motionless in a dark, narrow space, their body partially visible, creating a sense of vulnerability and stillness. This piece was inspired by In Praise of Shadows by Jun’ichirō Tanizaki, emphasising the beauty found in darkness and the subtlety of shadows. The use of low light and deep contrast reflects the influence of Tanizaki’s appreciation for the interplay between what is seen and unseen. The ripples in the water symbolise the fleeting nature of time and the fragility of life, while the indistinct silhouette suggests the idea of impermanence, evoking a sense of melancholy.
